PRESS RELEASE: LIBERTY COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY CALLS FOR THE PASSAGE OF HB 2197 TO ABOLISH ABORTION IN TEXAS

Liberty, TX – March 3, 2025

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX – On Thursday, February 27, the Liberty County Republican Party Executive Committee unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the Texas Legislature and Governor Greg Abbott to prioritize the passage of House Bill 2197, which seeks to abolish abortion and provide equal protection under the law to all preborn children.

Recognizing that the Texas Penal Code defines an individual as “a human being who is alive, including an unborn child at every stage of gestation from fertilization until birth,” the resolution highlights the legal inconsistency that currently allows self-managed abortions to continue unchecked. An estimated 29,300 abortions are being committed annually in Texas through abortion pills, despite existing laws protecting the unborn.

The Liberty County GOP stands firmly on the principle that all human life is valuable and that the law must protect all individuals equally, including the preborn. The resolution aligns with the Texas GOP Platform, which urges lawmakers to secure the right to life and equal protection for all preborn children, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

The resolution specifically calls on Texas lawmakers, including State Senator Robert Nichols and State Representative Janis Holt, to co-author and champion HB 2197 or a corresponding Senate bill to abolish abortion in Texas once and for all.

“The right to life is the most fundamental right, and our laws must uphold justice by protecting all innocent human beings,” said Wesley Thomas, County Chair of the Liberty County Republican Party. “We urge the Texas Legislature to act swiftly and pass HB 2197 to end this grave injustice.”
